Prusa XL Basics – Technical Fundamentals

This article lists custom G-codes for the Prusa XL Toolchanger that go beyond normal day-to-day printing.
These are diagnostic and calibration tools, not beginner features. Use them only if you understand what you are doing
1. Toolchanger Stress Test
A G-code that repeatedly and rapidly cycles through all tools.
Purpose:
- Stress the mechanical system
- Test tool coupling reliability
- Verify parking positions and repeatability
- Expose early mechanical failures
This is loud, aggressive, and intentional. Not meant for continuous operation.

2. Belt Tension Equalization
Moves all axes in a controlled and repeatable pattern to balance the belt tension over the entire belt.
Useful:
- after belt tension adjustment
- before belt tension measurement
- This protects the electronics because no large manual movements are required
This is essential for perfect belt tension.

3. Max Flow Calibration Test
Determines the maximum sustainable volumetric flow per tool / nozzle.
Relevant for:
- high-speed profiles
- large nozzle diameters
- material comparisons
- nozzle flow benchmark
Shows very clearly whether the limiting factor is the temperature, nozzle, or filament.

4. Pressure Advance Calibration
Pressure Advance compensates for pressure build-up in the nozzle during acceleration and deceleration.
Correct calibration results in sharper corners, consistent line width, and fewer blobs or gaps.
Recommended when printing at higher speeds, using different materials, or running multiple tools with different flow behavior.

5. Manual Tool Offset Calibration
A G-code for manual fine-tuning of tool offsets.
Recommended:
- if you don’t fully trust automatic calibration
- when mechanical tolerances stack up
- after toolhead or nozzle changes
If you want perfection, there’s no way around it!

Bottom Line
These G-codes are for advanced users and professionals.
If you just want to print, skip them.
If you want to understand, validate, and optimize your Prusa XL, they are exactly what you need.
